Homemade Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

practicalsavings.net

We love pizza around here and making it is quite simple if you plan ahead a bit. It can also be a fun meal to get the whole family involved with… each making their own personalized or adding their favorite toppings. Our kids love to help make pizza.

First, mill your flour (I love love love our WonderMill and that we can now mill our own flour).

Next, you need sugar, salt, olive oil, warm water and yeast.

Mix 1 cup of your flour with the sugar, salt and yeast in a large bowl. Add your olive oil and warm water (print recipe below for full instructions).

Once you’ve mixed everything together, you’ll have to knead it with your hands… fun fun fun. 🙂 Place in an oiled container and let rise for about 30 minutes in a warm place.

Pre-bake your crust so it doesn’t get soggy when you add the toppings… ’cause no one likes soggy pizza. 🙂

Add your favorite sauce, toppings or whatever and bake. Enjoy. 🙂

Homemade Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

Ingredients
  • 2½ to 3 cups, whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package or 2¼ teaspoons, regular or quick active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup very warm water
Instructions
  1. Mix 1 cup of flour with your sugar, salt and yeast in a large bowl. Add in your olive oil and warm water. Mix for about 3 minutes, scraping the sides as needed. Add in enough of the remaining flour until the dough is soft and no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes or until the dough is springy and smooth. Place in an oiled dish and loosely cover with plastic wrap or a lid. Let rise for about 30 minutes in a warm area.
  2. Once dough has risen, removed from container and divide into half (or more if you want more personal-sized pizzas). Roll out on a lightly floured surface until size and thickness desired is reached. Lightly spray your pan with Pam and place your crust on the pan.
  3. Pre-bake your crust at 425 degrees for 7 minutes or so. Remove from oven, add your sauce and toppings and bake for 8-10 minutes.

Grain Mill Wagon Challenge Experience:
I was thrilled to be a part of the Grain Mill Wagon Challenge. Our family has been making the effort to eat healthier for the last year and a half by switching to more whole grains/whole foods and doing away with the processed/refined foods. Being a part of the Grain Mill Wagon Challenge allowed us to just further that effort by giving us the option to mill our own flours and learn more about incorporating whole wheat and other flours into our diet.

While milling our own flour is an extra step, the WonderMill has made it so easy and quick that it isn't an inconvenience and our whole family has enjoyed the benefits of fresh milled flour. Being a part of the Grain Mill Wagon Challenge has encouraged me to find more ways to incorporate whole grains into our diet as well as find family favorite recipes.
