Strawberry Poptarts

Strawberry PoptartsStrawberry poptarts are a childhood favorite treat, but they often contain ingredients that I’m not interested in feeding my family. Because I enjoy making a lot of our meals & snacks from scratch, I knew there had to be a way to make homemade poptarts, since just about anything can be made at home with the help of the internet.Strawberry Poptarts // The Haas MachineI’ve also recently become more interested in milling our own flours because of the added health benefits. When you grind a whole wheat berry to make flour, you are grinding the bran & germ into your flour. Because the germ has oil in it, the flour can turn rancid, so it’s removed in commercial flour. But most of your fiber, vitamins, minerals, & antioxidants are in the bran & germ. When you grind it at home, you’re leaving in all the good stuff! Strawberry Poptarts // The Haas Machine After accepting the Grain Mill Challenge, I was a little worried that milling my own grain would be just another thing to do. As a busy stay-at-home mama & blogger, I’m constantly in the kitchen already, so I was a bit concerned that this would add to my ever-expanding “to do” list. I am happy to report that this fear was ridiculous! I think it literally took me more time to get the mill out of my cupboard than it did to grind up the wheat berries to make the flour. Strawberry Poptarts // The Haas MachineAll you do is pour the wheat berries into the mill (turn it on first) & then voila! Flour is created! You can keep your freshly ground flour for 1-2 weeks on the shelf before it starts turning rancid, or you can keep it in the freezer to stay fresher longer.Strawberry Poptarts // The Haas MachineI feel like a whole new world has opened up to me! Being able to grind so many other foods will help keep my family healthy & save us loads of cash (especially when you’re trying to use things like quinoa flour which is so expensive!) I love our new mill & I’m excited to continue developing more recipes to feed my family.Strawberry Poptarts // The Haas Machine

Strawberry Poptarts
Ingredients
1 egg yolk
1 tsp water
1 pie crust (using freshly ground wheat berries)
2 tbsp strawberry jelly
2 large strawberries, sliced lengthwise & carved into hearts

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F & cover a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat mat. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk & 1 teaspoon water & set aside.

Roll out the pie crust till it’s very thin (about 1/16th of an inch thick). Cut into whatever size/shape you like (I did small-ish sqaures) re-rolling the dough as needed.

Take half of the shapes & cut out a heart in the center, using the strawberries carved into hearts as a guide & set aside.

On each of the  remaining shapes, spread  a layer of strawberry jam, making sure to leave a 1/2 inch border around the entire shape. Place a strawberry carved heart on top of the strawberry jam. Top with the pie dough with the heart carved out of the center.

Seal the edges with the prongs of a fork & brush with egg wash mixture. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer to a cooling rack & let cool for 5 minutes.

About The Haas Machine

John & Gillian Haas are the creators behind The Haas Machine. They like to blog about their simple DIY projects & recipes that they make for their family. When they're not creating, they like to enjoy spending time listening to records, hiking through the southern Wisconsin bluffs, & chasing their spunky 2-year-old daughter through the farmer's market.

Grain Mill Wagon Experience: I'll be honest & say that I was a bit intimidated when I found out that I would be receiving a grain mill. Although i love making food from scratch & the majority of what we make is pretty healthy, I was nervous that grinding my own grains would be just another thing for me to do. I'm a busy stay-at-home mama of one, pregnant with our second, & actively blog at The Haas Machine, so I was worried that another step in my cooking or baking process would be bothersome. I was relieved to discover that grinding my own wheat berries for flour in my homemade bread took no more time than my normal preparations! I also discovered that I can buy local organic grains in bulk within driving distance of our home, so I am saving a boatload of money (there's no way we could afford to buy organic flour). We've also been experimenting a bit with eating Paleo, so being able to grind up quinoa instead of buying the spendy quinoa flour has been a life-saver. Being encouraged to write 3 posts using the grain mill was the incentive that I needed to become more familiar with the machine & I'm so glad that I invested the time into using it because now we have a very practical kitchen appliance that will save us money, time, & help keep my family healthy.
